Category B+E Training

If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997, you’re now allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM. Changed on 16 December 2021

Teesside LGV Training is an approved training centre with the Skills for Logistics for the delivery of Category B E Accredited Training

Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and the Department for Transport (DfT) have worked with the trailer training industry by forming the National Council for Accredited Trailer Training (NCATT) to oversee the scheme and set good towing practice.

DVSA have provided official recognition of the Skills for Logistics B+E accreditation scheme

B+E accreditation scheme

The B+E accreditation scheme is a new voluntary trailer training accreditation scheme which has been developed in partnership with the driving training and trailer industries to provide motorists with the skills, knowledge and competencies to tow safely.  

What will you learn on our accredited B+E Course?

Our B+E accreditation scheme is designed educate a driver in the safe procedures of towing a trailer – for life. it can build your skills and confidence and also educate you on reversing not just in an area, but can be catered to your needs.

This syllabus sets out how to train drivers in the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to be safe and responsible drivers when towing a trailer with a category B vehicle.

On successful completion of this training, drivers will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following 12 aspects of driving whilst towing a trailer with a category B vehicle:

  • Preparing a vehicle and its occupants for a journey
  • How to guide and control the vehicle whilst towing
  • How to competently reverse a vehicle and trailer
  • How to uncouple and recouple the trailer safely and competently
  • Use the road under the Highway Code
  • Drive safely and responsibly in the traffic system
  • Road safety benefits
  • Fuel-saving driving techniques
  • Safe driving techniques
  • Safe loading
  • Vehicle-handling techniques
  • Legislative requirements

How long is the B+E Course?

Course duration is normally 1 day training but can be extended if a candidate has no experience and would like the extra time. The course is normally run on a 1-1 basis, but some organisation will look to add two candidates onto a course. Depending on the level of the candidates this ideally would be two days in duration.

Certification

On successful completion of the B+E Accredited training, a candidate will receive an official certification to show that they have attended and reach the required standard.
